Call Your Parents Once In A While

Parents realize that college students are busy. Students have classes, assignments, study time, research, campus activities, social events, dating, part-time work, sports and down time for eating, rest and sleep.

Parents understand all of that. However, parents want to hear from and talk to their kids, when they are away at college.

Parents love their children, are proud of them and want them to be successful. They want to know how their children are doing and what they are doing.

If parents can help with something, they want to know what it is they can do. All of that means that parents want to talk to their children, not just receive a brief text, tweet or e-mail message.

To some extent, parents experience the world through their children. Many parents never went to college. They want to know what it is all about, every detail. Other parents want to relive the good times they had during the college years.

They want their children to experience and enjoy college and all of its activities the way they did. To bring back those memories, they want their children to describe their schedule, activities, feelings, experiences and accomplishments.

Students usually do not know what to talk about with their parents. So, let me provide a list.

Parents want to hear about: your dorms or housing, the food and whether you are eating well, your roommates and how you get along, friends you make, who you are dating, boy/girlfriends, classmates, your classes, Professors, the problems and challenges you encounter, activities and how you spend your time, research and study habits, papers and projects you are working on, the athletic teams and their performance, your part-time job, your boss, other employees, your sleep habits and whether you get enough rest, your plans for the next semester and the future, your dreams, your happiness, whether you are having fun, what you hate and what you want them to do to help you.

They are not nosey. They just want to be part of your lives.

Parents were your age once too. Most of them went through things similar to what you are going through. They all have experiences and advice that you should hear and maybe utilize when you take action.

Learning from your parents is not much different than learning from a Professor. They want you to learn their lessons, so you will have better answers and responses to the challenges you will face at work and in life.

Your parents love you and only want the best for you. So, call your parents once in a while to keep them informed, let them know that you love them and to show them that you appreciate all they have done for you.
