La Trobe University, in an effort to reduce a $65 million budget deficit, has merged all of their faculties into two colleges - the College of Life, Society and Culture and the College of Science, Health & Engineering.
Merging faculties is one way to improve operational efficiency, through centralising administrative functions that have traditionally been duplicated within every faculty. With many universities facing significant budgetary constraints, structural changes are becoming a way to improve efficiency.
Some other strategies to improve the long-term sustainability of university operations include:
- Integrating long-term strategy and budgeting
- Centralising administrative tasks
- Outsourcing non-core functions
